Closing Night 16th Annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles

Now in its 16th year, the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) is a nonprofit organization devoted to a greater appreciation of Indian cinema and culture by showcasing films and promoting the diverse perspectives of the Indian diaspora. The five-day festival is the premiere platform for the latest in cutting-edge global Indian cinema and bridges the gap between the two largest entertainment industries in the world – Hollywood and India. The festival showcases more than 25 films from the Indian filmmaking community across the globe, and hosts the highly anticipated Opening and Closing red carpet Galas, and the Closing Awards ceremony.

The Closing Night Red Carpet of the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles features the LA premiere of the feature film, Village Rockstars. This all takes place this Sunday, April 15 at the Regal LA LIVE, with the Red Carpet happening from 5:30PM until 6:45PM. Thats at the Barco Innovation Center, 1000 W. Olympic Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90015.

Village Rockstars is the story of Dhunu, a free-spirited tomboy who lives with her widowed mother and older brother as they struggle to get by in their small village in Assam. One day, after seeing a band at a local event playing with Styrofoam “guitars”, she dreams of owning a real one of her own and becoming a rockstar. She saves money and forms a supporting band with the local boys, but her rockstar hopes seem impossible without magical thinking. After an epic rainfall destroys the local crops, Dhunu is caught between the fantasy life of youth and the harsh reality of impending adulthood.

Having shot the film in her own home village of Chhaygaon, filmmaker Rima Das (who is the film’s director, writer, editor, director of photography, production designer, costume designer and casting director) shows the beauty of the landscape and people without hiding from the culture of conformity that threatens young girls. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, Village Rockstars has a soul and vision rare in Indian cinema today and marks Das as a major emerging filmmaker.

Village Rockstars also just won four awards at India’s 65th National Film Awards including Best Feature, Best Editing and Best Child Artist. So, you're bound to see something great with a vitality unlike anything you could see in a Hollywood production. Don't miss this opportunity to participate in a red carpet event and to gain some culture in the process.
