If you’re in the New York City area and you’re looking for something family friendly to do with your vacationing brood be sure to check out the film lineup at Lincoln Center. They have a schedule of classics for the rest of May through the end of June geared toward the whole family. This is a great opportunity for multiple generations to share in the fun of an old fashioned movie going experience complete with popcorn and big screens.
Every weekend between now and the weekend of June 30 and July 1 the Film Society at Lincoln Center is offering two screenings (one on Saturday and one Sunday) of the same classic film. With choices ranging from a 1930 musical to an Academy Award winning heist film you’ll have plenty of options for pleasing the tastes of young and old and everything else in between. I most particularly recommend you don’t miss the comedy great, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein June 16 and 17. Not only will it entertain the younger generation, but it will bring back fond memories for the adults who remember seeing it as kids - on TV for the parents and possibly in the theater for grandma or grandpa. Its silly childish humor is timeless and extremely satisfying.
The rest of the lineup includes the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers crowd pleasure Shall We Dance, the Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin comedy Artists and Models, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in The Big Sleep, and Paul Newman and Robert Redford in their second and last teaming, The Sting. With so many great films to choose from why be selective at all? Be sure to catch as many of these classics as you can and you’ll be certain of two things - a fun time for the whole family and the memories of a classic film going experience that will stick with everyone for a lifetime. Seems like a pretty fair trade for the inexpensive price of admission.
